Add ModifyReturnValue

I urgently need to refractor that method. I get pain in the eye
when I look at the method and thus have serious trouble concentrating
(to the point that I am writing the commit message half blindly so
my eyes can rest). I should really do something against my sensitivity
to light I have at times.
